The legendary George Carlin dies at 71 and leaves behind some performances that have altered media guidelines. When he uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested on charges of disturbing the peace, freed on $150 bail and exonerated when a Wisconsin judge dismissed the case, saying it was indecent but citing free speech and the lack of any disturbance.
When the words were later played on a New York radio station, they resulted in a 1978 Supreme Court ruling upholding the government’s authority to sanction stations for broadcasting offensive language during hours when children might be listening.
“So my name is a footnote in American legal history, which I’m perversely kind of proud of,” he told The Associated Press earlier this year.
He produced 23 comedy albums, 14 HBO specials, three books, a couple of TV shows and appeared in several movies, from his own comedy specials to “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” in 1989 — a testament to his range from cerebral satire and cultural commentary to downright silliness (and sometimes hitting all points in one stroke).
Carlin, who had a history of heart trouble, went into St. John’s Health Center in Santa Monica on Sunday afternoon complaining of chest pain and died later that evening, said his publicist, Jeff Abraham. He had performed as recently as last weekend at the Orleans Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas.
The film was in development hell since the 1989 release of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, because Spielberg and Ford initially disagreed over Lucas's choice of the skulls as the plot device. Screenwriters Jeb Stuart, Jeffrey Boam, M. Night Shyamalan, Frank Darabont and Jeff Nathanson wrote drafts, before a script by David Koepp satisfied all three men in 2006. Shooting finally commenced on June 18, 2007, and took place at locations in New Mexico, New Haven, Connecticut, Hawaii, Fresno, California, and soundstages in Los Angeles. In order to keep aesthetic continuity with the previous films, there will be minimal use of computer-generated imagery and more of a reliance on traditional stuntwork, and cinematographer Janusz Kaminski has adapted his style to that of Douglas Slocombe from the previous films.
Marketing will rely heavily on the public's nostalgia for the series, with products taking inspiration from all four films. Anticipation for the film resulted in a legal dispute over an extra violating his non-disclosure agreement, and another man was arrested for stealing a computer containing various documents related to the project. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is scheduled for a worldwide release on May 22, 2008
"Touch My Body" is the first single off of Carey's upcoming album "E=MC2," the follow-up to her Grammy-winning disc "The Emancipation of Mimi," released in 2005, that year's best-selling album with five million copies sold; it marked a huge comeback for the multi-platinum superstar after personal and professional setbacks.
With her 18th chart-topper "Touch My Body," Mariah Carey has passed The King for the most No. 1 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, and is now second only to the Beatles.
As expected, Mariah Carey moves past Elvis Presley and
into sole possession of second place for most No. 1s in the rock era,
as "Touch My Body" soars 15-1 on the Billboard Hot 100 to become her
18th chart-topper. Carey
might equal or pass The Beatles, who holds the all time record with 20 No. 1s before her album set runs its
course. The song also is No.
1 on the trade magazine's digital download chart thanks to a
precedent-setting 286,000 downloads in its debut week.
Carey, 38, said this is the most enjoyable point of her nearly two-decade old career, and that's her priority these days, not trying to set sales records or even making pop history. "I've gone through enough of my life worrying about that kind if thing," said Carey.
Madonna also beat a Presley record this week, surpassing the King for the most top 10 hits with her 37th for her hit "4 Minutes."
This is the first time since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital sales in that two titles debut simultaneously on Hot Digital Songs with more than 200,000 downloads each. The week also marks the best single-week digital tally in either artist's career.

Living in Atlanta and being familiar with the mess that is known as the metro Atlanta highway system, iQ is familiar with the tax rising gas prices has put on the consumer's pocket.
AD AGE'S POLL QUESTION: What do you think is the most important factor for consumers deciding where to buy gas: brand, price or location?
VOTE & COMMENT for possible publication in next week's 'Advertising Age' at http://adage.com/poll?poll_id=116
He had 90 of the 124 first-place votes and a total of 493
points. Marcus Camby of Denver, last year's winner, was second with 12
first and 178 point "You have to be able to
talk, understand what's about to happen and then, obviously, speak on
it," he said, "and talk loudly because sometimes you're on the road and
you're dealing with (noisy) crowds." The crowd will be very
noisy Wednesday night, but it will be rooting for the Celtics against
the Hawks in the best-of-seven series between the top and bottom seeds
in the Eastern Conference. The defense excelled in Sunday night's opener, a 104-81 win in which Boston held Atlanta to 38.2 percent shooting. "You
should see him in shootaround" before a game, Perkins said. "We're
going over the other team's plays. He's very focused and he wants
everybody else to lock in. Team defense is key. ... He gives us our
whole swagger as far as how we're the bad guys. We chose to be the bad
guys of the league right now." "He's been the class of the
NBA defensively for a long time now," Pierce said. "He just anchors our
defense. He controls the paint, blocks shots, a lot of things that
don't show up in the stat sheet, with his talking." And if some Celtics don't believe it, they're sure to hear it from Garnett. "Doc
always says I'm the talkative one out of the group. I beg to differ. I
debate strongly," he said, before admitting the obvious. "I'm just so
happy to be the one that speaks louder than all those guys. "You
could have pretty much gone through our whole roster and picked out a
(solid) defensive guy," Garnett said. "That's what we are. That's our
identity."
Can we, Kevin Garnett, and his supporting class finally look forward to getting a NBA Championship Ring?
